I have an approx 5ftx5ft area behind a playhouse which is currently bare soil, there are no other plants.
If you stand in the middle facing north you have a 4ft high back of playhouse, east is fairly open, behind a stone wall topped with railings, the wall about 3/4ft and to the west a 6ft high fence 
The whole garden is north facing but on a downward slope so the shade of the house doesn't really affect it much at this time of year.

I would like grass as it's a separate play area for the kids, but if there isn't a suitable turf there is lots of other grass in the garden they can play in, if someone has a better suggestion.

Artificial grass? some of them are very realistic, they can be a bit expensive but your area is fairly small so wouldn't be too bad.

Now would be a good time to sow your own grass seed, and B&Q do a lawn seed mix for shady areas:
