New grape vine
« on: May 06, 2015, 21:58 »
Hi all,

I received two grape vines from an online nursery, one is lakemont and the other Suffolk red. I am a bit dubious about the Suffolk red as it seems to have no foliage compared to the lakemont which looks ok!

Does anyone have any experience of the grafting process and does it look like it will burst into leaf?!

Should I get in touch with the nursery?

Some years ago about 10, my neighbor let me take cuttings, I made sure I had some buds on them and cut about 7 about 2foot or less long, put them in potting compost ad they all came up, just did the same on the ones I had cuttings from for the sister in law, about 15 inch each, and they are looking good too, have leaf on them now, the wife is from Cyprus and she makes dolmathes from them, and takes most of the new leaf off, blanches them and then freezes them and we have dolmathes all year round now

I'd say the one on the left doesn't look right. Send the nursery the picture and they should send you out a new one.

I got three vines from Wilkos back in January, all looking like your one on the left. Until mid-April they continued to look like that then all of a sudden they've just sprung into life. Only 1 or 2 leaves per vine so far, but it's progress; I was convinced they were dead so quite happy!

Get them planted and chuck some feed or fertiliser down and hopefully it'll sprout.

My fully established grape vine hasn't got a leaf on it yet, so I'd be patient with the cutting before declaring it lost.

In my experience white grapes tend to break bud earlier than red so I would plant them both out and monitor them both. Look after the white one you could get a frost on the UK yet, I am just about at the stage of trimming the tops off my grapes as they have grown about two feet already.

Thanks for the replies, it is planted out now.

I haven't contacted the nursery yet, I guess they will say be patient!

I will send them an email now! Fingers crossed for a nice summer and plenty if growth!
