Title: Trying to find the name of an invasive plant
Post by: Patricia7455 on June 08, 2009, 17:08
I have a very invasive shrub in my garden, just wondering if anyone might know the name of it.  I have not got any photos unfortunately as I have been trying to dig it up for a couple of years but it still keeps trying to come back.

It's height is about 4ft when it flowers in late summer, pretty pink flowers bobbing about on long stems.  The leaves come up a brownish green and grow in size, they are shaped a bit like a sycamore shape, are hairy with long hairy stems and a toothed edge.  Roots go down quite deep and are very delicate and difficult to dig up.  But they can go beneath paving slabs and the plant can reappear in the lawn as well as further down the flower bed.

Obviously more suited to a bigger garden, now it's in it is proving difficult to get rid of.
Any ideas of what it could be?

Sounds a bit like a sumac.
The hairy leaves and stems are the bit, not sure about the other parts of the description. It is a pain to get rid of. When the main tree is attacked the roots under ground will try and grow into new ones.
So it is the attaempt to remove it that causes the spread :( :( :( :(

Sorry to say that it is either dig all roots out of the ground, and that is difficult, or revert to chemicals of some sort. Just no idea what and how effective anything may be.

Then again if not a sumac all the above is irrelevant. :D :D

Wow - I just had a great Monty Python quote pop in my head. In any case - is it a shrub or looking like a shrub = more of a vine-like thing? That would be a Kudzu in all likelihood.
