Coop surveillance gadgets..
« on: January 12, 2014, 16:25 »
Anyone using a wireless camera to view their hens and check OK/safely in at night?  I like the idea of viewing them online if I'm away from home...
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

I have considered it as where I live is extremely remote and dark at night and also my field is not directly attached to my cottage. Last summer I 'lost' 9 call ducks and ducklings and because of the lack of 'animal' evidence I still suspect they may have been stolen as I was selling them for between £40 to £50 a pair. There are several very capable systems out there from wireless CCTV to Guardcams and some especially for recording animals. The problem might be that you may need a power supply and the recording device is usually an SD card which holds only a small amount of data (unless you also buy a DVR) especially if left on all the time, although you could set it to 'motion only'. You also need to make sure the camera has good enough capabilities if you want to record at night and that's where it starts to get expensive.  I have just had to install CCTV on my home because of my neighbour (long story and not feeling strong enough emotionally to explain)  but I used a company called MIECCTV Solutions and they were brilliant and also very competitively priced.   Hope that helps.

I bought a time lapse camera from Garden Nature but they also sell lots of other camera set ups and live streaming.  You might be able to get something cheaper elsewhere but I thought they were competitively priced.

I have got one of these
http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/Bushnell_Trophy_Cam_8MP_HD_Max_Colour_Viewer_Night_Vision_Camera/?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=directory&utm_content=GBR&currency=GBP&country=GBR&SelectedBundle=179506&gclid=CLOjhLa7-7sCFanjwgodCA0AVg

I haven't thought about putting it in with the chooks to be honest.

They are very very good, I got it to keep an eye on my garden while at work .

If you look around you can get them much cheaper than that site.

I've just ordered an infra red wireless camera that has an IP address so you you use the internet to view the hens from anywhere in the world!

Should be here anyday now, I' going to install it in the coop so I can watch them roosting in the dark, (infra red) or during the day and in the nest boxs, just for a bit of fun.

This is the one, its due any day, it was £27 or best offer, they accepted £22.50......
