Another Low Water Pressure Problem!
« on: May 03, 2007, 22:42 »
Hello All,

I moved into a new house in the winter and have just started watering my new lawn now the sun is out in earnest.

My problem is that my sprinkler hardly has any "throw" at all. The pressure coming out of my outside tap does not seem that great but without any benchmark I don't know if it's low or if my old house was high!

I have fully opened all the stopcocks, swapped hoses and sprinklers with my neighbour but still have no joy. I am on a dedicated feed from the mains and the problem is the same at all times of the day.

For information, to fill a 2 gallon watering can takes approx 50 seconds from my outside tap (same as from my tap in the kitchen)....is this normal or very low?

Please help a perplexed lady!

Is the stopcock in the street fully open ? 50 secs to do 2 galls don't seem to bad, I'm gonna after go fill a bucket now !

And to the site

"Under the regulations set by the Director General of Water Services, the minimum pressure we have to provide is 10 metres head at a flow rate of 9 litres per minute." which is about 2 galls.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Hello helenm and welcome.  We have our own water supply from a spring so can't help with your question.  With our water pressure it takes about 50 seconds to fill a pint glass!!

No, gravity fed since the spring is higher than the header tank in the loft.

Hello and welcome to the site.  Is your internal pressure higher than your hosepipe?  If it is then maybe the pipe was fitted using a self tapping kit.  This makes a hole smaller than the bore of the pipe and reduces the water pressure a great deal.  Got the same problem.

Thanks to everybody for their replies and welcome,

In answer to some of the questions;

The pressure from the end of the hose is about 2/3 that from the outside tap. Pressure from the outside tap is same as the indoor tap.

Can anybody recommend a sprinkler that would work with a lower pressure? My Hozelock one moves but the coverage is only about 4m square.....with a 50m square lawn that's a bit of a problem!

Thanks

Helen
