Title: What size rug for pony
Post by: chloe on April 28, 2012, 22:08
I recently brought a 6ft shires lightweight turnout rug for my 14.1 nf x appaloosa gelding but it's too big (old owners told me to get this size) I was just wondering what size would anyone recommend getting? I was told 5,6 or 5,9 but I'm a bit confused. He's not that chunkey but quite long. Many thanks.

If a six foot is really big on her, go for a 5' 6'' The narrower the pony, the less length they need as there is not so much width taken up by their shoulders. There are no real "rules" with rugs, some makes fit different horses differently (does that make sense?)

My own lad is 16.1 chunky but only takes a 6'6'' even though he has big shoulders. One rug of a different make is now on the way to a charity as it kept ending up behind his withers. If you try a 5'6'', make sure you put a sheet on first to keep it clean so you can return it if it doesn't fit. :)

Measure your pony from the center of the chest to the point of hip - this should give you the correct size of rug.  Hope this helps.  I had to have a 7ft 3in rug for my Shire cross!!!
