Am I suppost to prune my blackcurrants?
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:43 »

I have four blackcurrant bushes.  Well the sprog bought me one but I pinched three cuttings from it, anyway.  .  .  .

They are now three years old and have slim pointed  healthy looking buds all the way up the 'branches'.     If the bush produces fruit on the 2nd and 3rd years growth, am I correct in thinking I should leave them alone this year?        Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Yes Tony, unless there are some crossing branches that need removing.  Leave them alone this year and you should have a good harvest.  Next year you can start to prune out about a third of the fruiting wood to keep a good shape.

Don't do what I did and forget to net the fruit as I did not even get one this year, flipping birds
