Alpine strawberries
« on: June 02, 2010, 13:20 »
Someone has just offered me some alpine strawberry plants? I've never even tried such a thing but apparently they do really well just being ignored (which I like the sound of), she uses them as ground cover under other fruit shrubs does anyone here know about them or rate them?

Oh yes, and the best bit, my little don't like them. The taste is more intense, they are not juicey, quite dry infact, easy to grow and you get lots of them.
Take up the offer you wont be dissapointed.

Hiya

We've grown them from seed this year, so pleased cos I really thought we wouldn't be able to grow them.

My kids love them, they reckon they taste like watermelon, not like a strawberry at all.

Small but tasty berries ideal for adding to the breakfast cereal. Alpines have a long fruiting season and i have picked and eaten them on Christmas day.
They do grow like weeds and self seed or run all over the place. :)

Mine were started from seed and are coming into their third season.  They are woodland plants so do really well in shade too, mine see no sun at all and fruit for months.

Really strong strawberry flavour.

Oh they sound like a good thing then, :) think I will take up her kind offer then. It seems odd considering saying no but like everyone else my space is limited here.

i'd definitly say yes to them... they are lovely :)

i started some from seed last year for the first time and only got a handful-ish off 6 plants but this year they seem to have gone insane and are absolutely covered in flowers and little fruits... i can't wait to eat them
:)
