« on: July 30, 2008, 21:57 »

Does anyone have any ideas about how stop calabrese broccoli from sprouting flowers? Two of which have already done with gorgeous yellow flowers i might add. But darn it i wanna some eat some

Any advice would greatly appreciated, thanks for looking

I take it there's not much of a head to speak of before it flowers, in which case it's bolted. May be due to lack of water.

If there was a head, it's been left too long.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, they just don't stand on the plant, neither do some of the cauliflowers !

Oh dear.

Seed saving - not worth the effort IMHO, may as well have the things out & get soemthing else in.

I leave em for a bit for the birds. The perpetual spinach I let go to see was a magnet for goldfinch  :D

Sorry i didn't reply last night got distracted by work. Think i'll pull it out and plant something else in the broc. pot, prob some spinach or lettuce.
The bees seem to love the bolted flowers though they everywhere at the moment. I don't really get any birds where i am, i think they scared of the cats. Shame though it would be lovely to watch some in action. Lucky queen  :D

Oh Aunty where are broccoli seeds found on the plant i'm intrigued now  :)
Thanks again

I think Auntie was talking about the heads, not the seeds, when she said about them not standing on the plant.

The seed pods will form where the flowers are.

Were they an F1 Hybrid? If they were there's no guarantee as to what you'll get.

It's a lot of bother IMHO, seeds are cheap enough & if you raise the plants with one seed in a seed tray cell insert one packet will last years.
