« on: February 17, 2013, 08:45 »
i put in a good few leeks very late last year. they didn't get much chance to fill out before the winter. will they fill out now in spring or am i better off taking them out now?

They will go to seed this year. Pull them up but leave a couple to seed. They make lovely plants for the border with beautiful seed heads.

Oh I see. Well, I think they will fatten up unless of course they are a thin variety  :)  Have a look in the seed catalogue for the variety so you can see what they should look like.  Pencil leeks are just as delish as fat leeks though  :)

I have found that leeks seem not to fatten up after about the end of February. This is probably because they are busy growing a flower stalk ready to go to seed.

The flowers are very popular with bees  :D :D :D

and griddled skinny leeks are delicious  :nowink:
