I know its a daft question.

Use a hoe sharpener :D
-
Sensible answer.....
Use an oil stone, such as this (illustration purposes only)....

Available from all good DIY strores!
Where's ya bin Mandy?

Thanks I'll have a look at that link in a minute.
I was hiding last year, what with the loss of hair thing, (all of it in just a few weeks, alopecia)
I feel much better than I did, life goes on, even if its without hair. I'm even digging with a bald head. (don't worry I keep sun cream in the shed).
Thanks for asking, I'm touched.
How do use the oilstone... ????
-
I just use a metal file - does the job for me. Stop every 15 minutes for a few strokes and it's fine - whizzes through the weeds.
Lovely to see you on the site again, mandycharlie :)
-
Look at the hoe, chances are one edge is flat and one is sloped. Just run the oilstone over it until the metal is bright, then do the other side. (I use a file from the 99p shop but I am a bodger). You will see what to do when you start doing it. You will feel the benefit in no time.
-
I'll be serious now
I've actually got the same one at home and just use it like a file. You need to lubricate it with oil though - either motor oil or vegetable oil if you don't have any
-
glad to see you back! :D
I use a file, or an oil stone, or a Diamond card. (pretty much what ever comes to hand really)
-
See your getting technical again.. me, girl, aka female..
Diamond card?

Diamond card?
Gwiz is actually a multi millionaire with diamond encrusted super bling hoe sharpener. If you ask him nicely, he'll send you a tenner, no problem
-
I'm not even sure that's what it's called, but they come in all sorts of sives, don't weigh a lot, and are encrusted with lots of bits of diamonds (industrial grade)
very good at sharpening blades ect.
-
I forgot to mention.... I bought some off of Ebay.
3 for a fiver so I will only be able to let you have the OTHER fiver.
Sorry. :D

of course I sharpen my hoe!
all the time I'm sharpening it, I'm avoiding working up a sweat with it!
wouldn't want to start getting any excersise now, would I?
-
Sadgit - I'm shocked! Anymore comments like that and you'll be a pot boy, not an under-gardener :)
-
just give it a good work out on your weeds
-
I can highly recommend the diamond hone that gwiz suggested.
I use them for kitchen knives to gardening tools. The odd thing is the older they get the better they seem to work.
You can also get smaller versions of them that are ideal to go in your pocket for when you down the lottie & your knife needs a sharpen.
The link below is both sizes & 3 of each

angel grinder !!
-
I got a set of grinding stone drill bits from wilkinsons for a couple of quid.
Just fit into a drill, ands run them along the end.
I have no doubt this will wreck the tool pretty quickly, but if your lazy and its only a cheapy, it might not matter.
