Title: F1 Chilli Seeds
Post by: Glosterboy on January 31, 2023, 17:13
I have two varieties of own saved chilli seeds. One being Habanero, of which I know is a heirloom variety. Therefore, OK for saving for future growing. The other is Basket of Fire, of which is an F1 variety. Of which I believe will be hit and miss of any fruit produced. So, will it be a waste of time me sowing these Basket of Fire seeds? Or has anybody had reasonable results from sowing own saved F1 chilli seeds? Thanks.

If you have compost and space to grow the F1 plants to maturity, and fancy a gamble, why not try it?

The thing about F1s, as you say, is that they are utterly unpredictable as to which elements of the parent plant you will get the following year from seed!!

I've grown Basket of Fire for three generations in the past with no notable variation in flavour, vigour of plant or size of fruit. A little less heat in year 3, but that could have been down to weather and feeding rather than a genetic trait.
