Hi, we usually are on the poultry chat pages but have bit of a prob with our runner beans this year. A couple of our plants are very slow growing and their leaves have turned yellow. They are all seeds from last years crop, two thirds off the plants seem healthy and are growing well but the others (all in the same area) just don't seem to be thriving. Any ideas please?

Is it possible they get some cold, wind, wind chill damage in that spot?

Did you grow your beans in pots and plant out or did you sow the straight into the ground ?

If pot sown and planted out then it might just be that the roots have not grown themselves out of the original potting compost and may have used up all the nutrients there.  Just give them a bit of a boost with some liquid fertiliser the get them going well.

That's an interesting bit of info Auntie - most of my pot grown and planted out things are looking slightly anaemic. That must be the reason. Thanks!  :D

I put mine in far too early at the beginning of May, knowing that I could grow more if I had to

They went yellow and the veins on the leaves reddish. Then after a few days sunshine they went green again. Have little beans on them already, so it did work out, may be they will be strong enough to last a little longer into the winter after being toughened up eh?
