Title: Moulting question
Post by: carolbriar on June 22, 2010, 10:14
My hens are coming up to a year old soon and I have had them for 7 months now.  During that time they haven't moulted that I am aware of.  Presumably they will have a full moult this year but I don't really know what to expect.  Do they lose all their feathers and scales over a period of time?  Anyone any ideas on what triggers the moult to start?  Having just had the longest day I suppose in the next few months the moulting season will begin or can they moult at any time of the year?

usually they moult in winter. Some of mine you only notice when they shake and a load of feathers fly off but others loose loads in one go.

My older ex-barn girls decided mid-winter when it was freezing cold would be the best time to moult  ::) My warren I got at pol is having a moult now and she will be about 18 months old.
