First year growing sweetcorn last year, just planted them in pots etc and had an exelent crop, is there any gain from chitting sweetcorn first?

Have a read of the link I gave in my previous post.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have sown 20 Lark F1 for growing in the polytunnel. I have a few left for later sowing but will probably get another packet to sow at the start of April. I know some people that sowed later and the crop was very poor

Ah, but there again, you two don't live in Britanny, do you?

ah, but the question was if anyone else had started to chit their sweetcorn yet

Has anyone started to chit their Sweetcorn yet ?

and my answer was  ;)

:nowink: way too early for sweetcorn!  At least another 6 or more weeks to go for me

and they don't seem to completely recover even when the temperatures do improve!  :nowink:

I would agree - I never understood how anyone struggled to grow sweetcorn until last year when the temperatures in May dropped (not necessarily frost, just got cold)  The plants were about a foot high in pots hardening off outside but the cold spell went on for several days before I realised all was not well.  The plants just stopped growing and never recovered.  By July they were still the same size and ended up in the compost bin. Lesson learned - be ready to squeeze them back into the overcrowded greenhouse if the weather forecast is poor  ;)

Well I have now set my Luscious F1 for chitting, will have to keep my fingers crossed for a warm Spring.

It's looking promising  :D  I've not heard of Luscious F1 - just had a google.  Apparently a bi-colour, quite a tall variety

Yes, they are supposed to be a 'sugar enhanced' variety from nickys seeds, might also have a go with sweet corn 'minipop' for using in stir frys, they are at Nickys Seeds as well .

I have already chitted and potted up some that will be going in the polytunnel, so I reckon they'll be going in the ground in about 3 weeks, or thereabout.  Not sowing the outdoor ones until end of April at the very earliest.
