Hey up potiron,

I live on the isle of lewis, been here two years, We grew a poly tunnel the 1st year but the winter winds killed it, so we grew another this year and pruned it mid August ( took the poly off) hoping it will keep growing for next year !

I grew a variety of squashes this year - all planted straight into the manure heap.  They went off like rockets!  Had a big harvest of Ghost, Uchiri, Blue, Pumpkin; the Bumpkin (very small) and Butternut didn't do so well.  All are worth a go though.
Pause, be still and observe the world with all your senses - you will gain much!

Wish I'd pruned my polytunnel! The gales got to it yesterday   and I thought it was in a sheltered place. Wrong !!

It's just like the ones advertised on this page.... I had weighted down the skirts with scaffold planks but now it's in a heap. Live and learn  :(

Ah, never mind Thrift, plant another when the chance of frost has passed and dont forget to give it a hard pruning before the gales start in the Autumn   8)  ::)

Hi. is anyone going to be growing anything new or exciting, something they hav'nt grown before ?

I always try to grow something I have never done before this year it was aubergines managed three plants and 6 fruits in total, discovered I don't like the taste and they have hidden spikes. Next year it's a bonkers radish called "pink dragon" according to the seed catalogue they get  LARGE 6" long 2" dia so that's my thing to try for 2010.

Sorry my mistake. It's not bonkers it's just a very BIG radish called "pink dragon" if the catalogue is to be believed.  It was just that wanting to grow a bed of 6" long 2" dia radish might make me seem a bit bonkers.

There are quite a few unusual items I want to try next year.  Here are some of the more commonly available ones :

Crosnes/Chinese artichokes to outwit an inherited weed hill (apparantly they're quite persistant)

Rampion - on a hunch.  I love raw root vegetables.

Achocha - I grew 'fat baby' this year, will add lady's slipper next.  Not to everyone's taste, beware.

mouse melons

potato onions

South American collards, ie. cut and come again cabbage

a Portuguese tree cabbage, can't remember the name off the top of my head

While we`re on the weird veg does anybody grow `walking onions` and are they good to eat or just for novelty value.
