Leek advice
« on: March 31, 2021, 12:25 »
Couple of questions.
Should I have sown my leeks by now. I am a bit behind this year. When is too late?
Also I have quite a few leeks left on the plot from last year. Can I dig them up and freeze them or will that make them too mushy.
Thanks
Elaine

I’ve only just sown mine in a pot, so think it’s fine. I’ve dug up the last of the leeks and frozen them before and used them in soups and stews. I cut them into 2cm chunks so they can go straight into cooking.

Hi,
have some leek seedlings in pot but don't seem to be getting any thicker, same with onions from seed, first attempt so not sure if I've missed something?

Are you feeding them?  Any decent liquid feed will do  :)

Plenty of time. While I'm not sure when is too late, last year I sowed mine on 18th April outdoors in cat litter trays. They don't get planted onto the plot until July-ish time. Still harvesting them now (although wouldn't surprise me if they are starting to bolt with the recent weather).

I used to sow them in February but have got later through the years as the warmer weather speeds up the germination. I tend to start feeding towards the end of May to fatten them up before they are planted out.

You will be fine sowing leeks now they will still give a good crop. Leeks can be used in the kitchen at any size so don't worry 😉

No rush at all. End of the month for me at the earliest, and I find sowing later gives far fewer bolters.

I haven't sown mine yet, either - no worries!

Certainly won't worry about sowing anything this coming week with the weather forecast. But it's a bit early up here for leeks.
