Why are my ducks not laying yet? :-((
« on: October 07, 2009, 20:39 »
Hi All,

If I could prevail upon your wise words again!
Our breeder told us a couple of weeks ago that they should have been laying by now. "They" are 12 Kakhi Campbells, lovely contented little lot.
They have a garden shed at night with sawdust and ground boxes and half an acre of grassy ground to root around in all day. To eat, we give them a mix of corn, barley and pellets as a standard food, some treats of corn, bread and mash and than whatever else they find on their forraging around the grass.
They couldn't have a better lifestyle!! They even have a pond that they spash around in all the time! BUT where are the eggs?!!  ???

Any advice welcome!  Thanks, :)

Carrie

My Khakis started laying at about 20 weeks, but they layed all over the place.  :D
I used to find eggs everywhere.
They particularly like laying under the hedge.
You probably have a stockpile somewhere.  :D

Ducks have a 24 hour egg cycle unlike a chicken who as a rule has a 25 hour egg cycle :)
This means that most ducks lay at the same time everyday and again as a rule this is normally in the morning before 10am (9am in winter) :)

So if they are out before that time then as Janet says there is a chance you have got a stockpile somewhere :)

LOL!

They could be like the easter bunny with a big basket ful somewhere! They are 16 weeks and we are letting them out in the morning about 8am. So like Janet is saying we could have to be a bit more patient for a few more weeks, it was just with our breeder saying that they should be laying now  ???
Thank you for getting back to me so soon!!

They are 16 weeks Carrie  ;)

There's your answer. Think you breeder is very optimistic saying that they should be laying at 16 weeks. Most quote 18 weeks as the earliest to expect eggs with a range from 18-24 weeks. The earliest I've had is 19 weeks and I've had them wait till about 35.

Think you just need to be patient. You don't want them to start too early, it makes them much more likely to develop laying problems like prolapse.

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
