Gladioli question
« on: October 11, 2014, 15:12 »
I dug up one of my gladioli bulbs and it had lots of baby bulbs around it.
Are these worth potting up, or leaving in the ground?
I guess from the size of them they will take a long time to make flowering corms, so is it worth the effort.
I was hoping to move them so that they are all in one place

Thanks

Elaine

I would store them and plant then (in a shallow, wide, trench) in the Spring. They will come up like grass ... but they take a couple of years, at least, before they make a flowering-sized plant/corm, so your call whether you can be bothered :)

Thanks for your answer Kirsten, I will dig them up and pop them in a spare corner in the spring, and see what happens.

TBH these seem to be more trouble than they are worth unless you have a lot of spare space. Kirsten's description of them coming up like grass is spot on.

I shall be making sure I get as many as possible out when I take up my glads, as they were certainly a nuisance in amongst the carrots this year

Although ...

... reading the Gladoilli Society, or somesuch, website about propagation it reckoned that some of the babies will flower in first year, and majority of the rest in second year.

That has never been the case for me! but the website did make the following points (which I certainly didn't pay attention to when I tried to use the cormlettes for "mass propagation so that I have more cut flowers than I know what to do with" :D )

Plant early in the Spring (long growing season, I expect a Cloche wouldn't go amiss to hurry them along)
Outer brown skin / husk should be removed, or at least cracked
Make sure they never dry out
Harvest early - when the leaves go brown, but failing that no later than end September / early October.

I might try that next year and see if it actually makes a difference :)

Maybe that is where the glad that forced its way out through the base of the pallet compost bin came from then (and it flowered) --- one of those weeny ones that made its way in there two years back

Good luck with your experiment Kirsten... let us know if /when it works  :D
