Title: storing potatoes
Post by: Dopey113 on August 13, 2012, 15:39
How do I go about it? can I use paper bags from the chippy? do you have to clean them or prep them, also can you put different variety's in the same sack?

chippy bags are ok ;)
Just make sure the spuds are dry and kept dark and frost free.
I prefer to wash mine first - I hose them off at the plot and leave them to dry before I take them home.
It's worth checking each spud as you put it in the bag to make sure any damaged ones are used first.

I'd keep the varieties separate as some last longer than others.
Check them regularly for any rotting spuds - the smell gives them away Bleugh!

Would they store ok, if you put them in a barrel, filled with sand?  Done in layers, so they are not touching.  Would this work?  Or would they rot quicker as no air flow.
