raspberries
« on: January 24, 2010, 17:27 »
I have recently obtained my allotment, and I have 3 rows of raspberries 27ft long rows , but I'm only keeping 1 row, will I have any trouble digging up the other two, or will I forever be digging up offshoots like some I have asked tell me. Has any one been in the same situation, and what did they do to remove them completely.

You should be able to dig them out quite easily - raspberries root quite close to the surface.  You may get the odd one regrowing but it woun't be a problem to remove.

When Mrs Digger got her plot, we moved some we found from their original position. We weren't all that particular but only had 2 random canes pop up.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks all for advice. When  weather permits (2 weeks ago soil way to hard, since then, the soil is way to soaked) I will put my energy into removing them. Dont sound as hard as thought it would be. A few years ago had trouble with, If I can remember quite a few Blackberry bushes. all I remember that it was a nightmare.

I've just removed raspberry canes covering a large area.  Roots were compact but all near the surface...almost looked like a carpet of weeds - interesting root network.
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.
