Nothing to do with chickens!!!!!
« on: August 02, 2013, 17:34 »
Oh dear - found this in garden - tried leaving it alone - on bird table with bird food and all local sparrows took food and ignored him... So now he's in my silk pyjamas eating dog food and porridge! Hope he gets through the night....

The parents will be out there somewhere. I have had two healthy brood of blackbirds raised in my garden most of them stuffed with layers pellets ! :)

Yes - I left it alone for as long as I dared but no parent birds appeared and this one is too young to leave the nest so not sure how they would protect it.  Eating heartily and fingers crossed.

Mites everywhere so keeping well away from my chicky girls.

You probably have your answer there, too many parasites (and possibly the weakest chick dies) and the rest of the brood bale out !
A dust of diatom may help.  :)

That's a good idea...  and a bath for me

Been reading up and two weeks of care should be enough - then he'll take his chances out there.  Just couldn't let him die :(

Hello!

Didn't get through the first night - no surprise there.  He was in my room in case of night time room service squawks but - hey ho.

Aww that's a shame poor little thing. We found one in the garden this summer and put it back in the nest, 2 minutes later the b****r  fell back out. After repeating this a half dozen times under the watchful eye of mum & dad we left them to it. We think it's now the very scruffy looking youngster we have at the bird table each day, very tame but still losing its baby feathers.

We have been inundated with blackbirds this year, at least 3 broods. The little beggars are living on the layers pellets, my blackcurrants and raspberries. I used to like blackbirds.

Oh send them to me - I love 'em all!
Mine gave up nesting here after the local magpies raided their nest.
A treadle feeder will solve your pellet theft problem.

We had a similar thing (several years running) with a wren's nest in the top of our barn. The Husband was up and down the ladder quite a number of times a day (getting increasingly grouchy!!) to put the chicks back in the nest - not easy as it was up a 6m ladder, in the dark and single handed as the other hand was holding the chick! I rigged up a crash mattress for them underneath with a blanket and part deflated paddling pool on a wheelbarrow! First year they all survived and fledged which was great. We now have a lot of wrens in the garden  :D
