Are conifer chippings of any use? I hear two versions and its left me puzzled. Some say to use them for pathways only,while others use them as a mulch! There is no way I'm using conifer chippings as a mulch until I'm given firm proof they are fine for the job. I was looking for a cheap version of mulching my fruit this year and as conifer chippings are easily available here,I thought I'd ask you guys for some feedback. Thanks for your time.

They have a lot of sap in them and are inclined to make the soil underneath acid, and they take years to rot down (well mine did).
Good for paths but not for veg beds IMO

The sap Mum speaks of is actually resin. Takes ages to decompose so i would not use it as a mulch. If you use it for pathways you may find it sticks to your boots. The resin is 1 reason you should not use conifer logs to burn on indoor fires. The rein sticks to the inside of the chimney and next time you light thr fire you run the risk of a chimney fire.

Yes Fatcat,I had heard the sap is a resin and thats why I had my doubts about using these chippings as a mulch. I think I'll leave it out,this sounds more and more like more trouble than its worth!  :blink:
