Triffid masquerading as crop?
« on: July 22, 2010, 10:58 »
Back in April I planted a load of chilli seed (the variety "Hot stuff"), and one plant grew a bit faster than the rest.  It also started branching fairly early on.  As I'd not grown chillies before, I didn't know they don't do that!

I got very excited when it started flowering, then a bit disturbed as it produced more and more flowers - which then just turned to tiny seeds!  Does anyone have any idea what this plant is?  I'm pretty sure it's not a chilli!     The leaves are similar, although a bit darker green.  Didn't get a pic of the flowers, but they were remarkably similar to the final seeds in their cases.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Not buddliea.  They look like some sort of capiscum leaf, but beyond that I'm stumped.  Those flowers are completely new to me

Is it persicaria? (bistort)

Ooh!  Could well be!  Not the standard bistort, though.  Persicaria lapathifolia, I think - "Curlytop knotweed"!  :)  Thanks for that, I was starting to worry that it might be invasive/poisonous/something else unpleasant, as it was producing tons of seed everywhere!

I carefully cut the seed heads off it before I moved it (it was in the polytunnel with the chillies).  Kept the seed though, in case it turned out to be something rare and lucrative!

Could it be down to the cold start to the growing season?

It's not a chilliy buddliea is it?

Sorry

I agree that's what it looks like to me.

Did anyone see GW yesterday? In To...r - sorry Toby's wildflower meadow there was a plant that kind of looked  like your triffid, but as I was only watching through one eye, I missed its name. Anyone????
