Could some kind person help me with this one please. I'm sure it's teh most common weed in Britain but I can't find it in my books.
Been carefully removing the white bootlaces for ages but didn't know what the top growth was like. Now I do !!!

Thanks folks.

Rob  :)

Convolvulus aka bindweed, I'd say.

Leaves & roots look blindingly similar to this page...

Bindweed
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree...

except we've had bindweed everywhere and it looks darker and a LOT more chunky.

The other bindweeds had stems about 1 or 2mm thick and very weak. These are about 3-5mm and don't snap.

But I agree the leaves and roots match to a degree.

There's many different varieties, we've got a couple on our plot.

Commonly known as:
f******** purple flowered bindweed &
f******** white flowered bindweed.

(Flipping of course).

It looks herblike with that reddish tinge on dark green.

We do have what we think is nightshade elsewhere so you maybe onto something there.

I can feel a photgraphy session coming on tomorrow. Need to know what teh enemy is.

Do nightshades have those creeping rhizomous roots ?

I pulled out yards of it in the Spring.

Thought it was couch grass but obviously not.

Its definitely Black Bindweed, Fallopia Convulvulus

Does it have:

-Cotyledons long and oval, reddish green
-Small inconspicuous whitish green flowers (not as white as the white of Field Bindweed)
-lots of hoverflies round them

Helps if you can post a picture of a young plant/seedling when identifying weeds, especially showing the cotyledon.

I don't think its nightshade now.  Your plant has leaves in oposing pairs. Nightshade has alternting leaves.

I'll have to go and get my Keble Martin out
