Growing tomatoes and cucumbers outdoors
« on: May 21, 2007, 13:12 »
hi all, could do with a bit of advice.

my tomatoes in the greenhouse are all doing well.  but i've got quite a few left over tomatoes in pots.  i've got roma, ailsa craig, costaluto (beefsteak) and alicante.  also three marketmore cucumbers.  At the moment they are all in the greenhouse.

i've got loads of room all round the outside of the greenhouse, so i'd like to grow some outside. i've made a couple of 3 foot x 1 foot boxes and i've got quite a few very large pots.  I don't have a coldframe, so not sure how to go about hardening them off or if, indeed they need to be.  All the plants are about 6 inches high.

Helps if you say in your Profile where you are HT?  Regardless, they will need to be hardened off - after all, you don't go from greenhouse to garden in the same clothes ...

I grow toms successfully down quite an exposed plot. From the greenhouse, I sit them on our sheltered patio for a week, then pop 'em in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi,

I planted out my Marketmore last week and crossed my fingers and hoped there's be no frost (I'm in SE London btw) - I also planted out a couple of my tomato plants.

The cucumbers are looking really happy, have shot up an inch or so, but tomatoes mught be a bit more exposed, so not looking as content. I'm sure we're over the danger of frost by now, at least here in the SE (I hope!)
trying to be organic...

sorry, forgot to say, i'm in Devon.  Reckon i'll stick 'em outside during the day and bring them in at night for a week or so, then stick them out permanently, like you say, i think the danger of frost has past now  Although torential rain is another matter! :D

Agree, I'm in the Midlands and I feel that the danger of frost is over. But the cold wet weather! can shock the plants when they are newly transplanted, so hardening off for a week, as you describe is the safest way.

We have great crops from greenhouse plants but the outdoor plants also crop well, I usually stop the outdoor plants at 4 trusses , can I grow more ?

Grew loads of Gardeners Delight last year outside ,they tasted delicious.
