We are having problems with our cherry tree
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:14 »
Can anyone help?
We moved into our house 3 years ago and there is a lovely cherry tree.We have fruit from it yearly but this year a big 'hole' has appeared in the trunk-midway up.We have looked in the hole and I think there is some sort of woodworm. Will it kill the tree and how do we treat it?
Any advice would be great as we don't want to lose our tree :(

I'm no expert. I inherited a cherry tree on my plot last year and after doing some reading around about it online they sometimes only live for only 20 years, often killing themselves if not pruned and looked after. I'm no help, only pointing out that it may may becoming to the end of the road  :(

I hope there is a positive end to this and please keep the forum updated on the outcome.

I had that happen with a cherry tree and it was a borer. They literally bore tunnels into the tree and if not treated, will eventually kill the tree because they tunnel through the sap areas.

About the only cure is a systemic insecticide because there will be more than one borer in the tree and all will be hard to find to kill. Naturally this will make the fruit less than tasty for a year or so but it will save the tree. If you don't go after the borers with treatment, woodpeckers will start hunting for them and finish off the tree for you.

Thankyou very much for that info-dissapointing news though it is. I will pass the info to my husband and ask him to make it better,I will help by giving the cherry tree an extra hug when I walk past! :(
I will let you know how it goes
