I mean, how does an enthusiast rate one against another? Is it their voice tone or physical appearance or the content of their lyrics?

I guess theres rap and theres rap!  In general its the lyrics that should be important.  Whether we can relate to them is a different issue, be it commercial rap or less popular, like any music genre.  I have no time whatsoever for most commercial/modern rap but I love a lot of hip hop, which uses rap.  To me the stuff I like from the genre is akin to the reggae I also love or the folk songs of Woodie Guthrey or punk.  Repressed peoples shouting to be heard because no one is listening.

I think you could probably compare it to rock in the 1950s - 1970s, or jazz even before that.  Each of these forms were not appreciated very much by the generation that came before that style was popular, but was appreciated by the younger generation of that time.

"Rap", which involves the spoken word, is fairly old school now, going back to the 1970s (some would say earlier), overlapping with hip-hop as a musical style.  I hear a fair amount here.  I'd hardly consider myself a fan of the genre, but I'm a fairly old guy, so I don't judge too much (I think about my parents, and how they let Led Zeppelin go in one ear and out the other without editorializing or telling me to turn it off).  Like rock n roll, some of the rap I hear is good, some is boring; TBH, I couldn't name 5 rap artists if I had to, but my boys probably could. I sometimes hear someone listening to rap (hip-hop) where the lyrics are about something interesting or important to the artist, that can actually be quite good; poetry even. I hear some that seems to be about nothing more than misogyny, crime and violence: not very interesting to me.  Bringing it back to the rock comparison again, it's like comparing Bob Dylan (or Eric Clapton) to The Archies; you pick which of those you'd prefer to listen to.

It is also sometimes interesting to hear the way verses are put together to rhyme and flow from one subject to another.  Again, a few seem to do this well, many do not.  There are some forms that seem to involve a lot of improvisation, that can be interesting too.

For now, rap and hip-hop are enjoying a few decades in the sun.  When people of my son's generation are parents, there will be some new musical/spoken word form appreciated by their kids that may be unsettling to their parents too!   :D

For me the music/backing they are rapping over, is usually just as important than their words alone. IYKWIM

How is one rapper rated against another? For example, in most musical performances/performers the key elements are melodic quality, mellifluous and relevent vocal quality that hits the right notes, quality of backing music, performer's appearance and personality and relevence to the audience's lifestyle/aspirations/prejudices/hopes and fears etc

I'm not sure that a direct comparison to other musical styles works.  It's sort of like saying how does poetry compare to live theatre.  I think comparison between rappers is a matter of preference, but it would depend on content, flow, etc., and your personal tastes (like other musical genres).

There have always been "Soliloquys"      These are the thoughts of a person on stage relating his/her thoughts to the audience.   Maybe this is how rap evolved.   Mrs Bouquet
