Parafin Heater
« on: February 06, 2007, 22:40 »
Hi all,

I have a twin burner parafin heater for my greenhouse.  Problem is I can only get it to burn on a yellow flame so I can't use it (Boo Hoo).  I have tried trimming the wick and turning it down slowly to try to get it to turn blue but to now avail. Are there any tips to getting it to burn blue? The only things that are turning blue are my fingers and the air lol!!  I use parafin which I bought from the local garage who says it is suitable for heaters.  The stove was bought from new last year and I couldn't get it to burn then or now.  any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks

Dawn

Hi Dabhand,i hac a similar problem,i believe it is the rubbish fuel they sell.light the wick and adjust to the lowest level, before replacing funnel.

i dont think you will get a blue flame, but make sure its getting plenty of air anyway, check all ventilation holes are clear. If there are vent holes below the flame so air can get to the wick make sure those are clear, thats most likely to give a bluer flame.

I think with paraffin so long as its not smokey its ok.

Thanks for all your advice everyone.  I always thought it had to burn blue.  I will try adding some water to it as it does smoke some.

Cheers me dears...

It's to do with the type of burner, yellow flame burners are a very simple flat cool wick type, whereas blue flame burners are a little more sophisticated, using the heat of the flame to heat the (normally circular) wick together with air flow to produce an intense small blue flame, which is more efficient and less smokey.
When the weather changes I shall ....
