Hens and Lawn Feed
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:02 »
Just a quick questions about lawn feed.

We need to put some down but obvioulsy have the hens grazing. Some products tell you to keep grazing animals/birds off the lawn for two weeks but some just say that it is safe for animals once the product has dried or has been absorbed.

We will struggle not to let our hens on the lawn for two whole weeks, its not really fair on them for a start. I'm sure a fews days wouldn't be too much of a trouble.

Does anyone know of a product or if anyone currently uses a product that is safe for the hens I would be interested to find out?

Many thanks,

My only advice would be - whatever you end up using, be sure to follow any intructions to the letter as its the ground they eat more that the grass as they scratch about.  Residues are left by some and not others which may or may not be poisonous depending on the chemical used so be wise and do as you are instructed on the packet!

Just at thought. Would you need lawn feed as chicken poo is a very good source of fertiliser.

Well, Mrs Ploppy, this is my point  - the packets/instructions just don't give a clear explanation, which is why I was wondering if anyone else knew of a product that was 'safer'. I have even been on to the manufacturers websites and there are even less details on there!  ::) Obviously I realise that these products are not healthy for any animal

oh we have plenty of poo on the lawn, especially as we have given the composter a rest over the winter. But there are parts of the lawn that need a bit of tlc.

Oh well it may just mean keeping them off the lawn for a couple of weeks then

Just a thought, if you buy what you think is the most apropriate product they may have an advice line you can ring on the packet.  They shoud be able to advise you?????

What is actually wrong with your lawn? If it's had plenty of chicken poo it's unlikely that it needs feeding.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
