caulis
« on: July 04, 2009, 21:44 »
is it too late to start caulis from seed now?
i've got some that i started ages ago but they don't seem to be doing very well so i'd like to start some more if it's not too late. they will be going directly into the place where they will grow.
also, if it's not a silly question, does cauli start off green like broccoli before it goes white? or is it always white? does this mean that what i thought were caulis :D :D :D are in fact broccoli cos there is something forming in the middle but it's GREEN!!!!!!!!!

You can try, but caulis tend not to like the warmer, dryer weather.

You can get green, even purple caulis, but your standard one starts off white/cream & stays that way.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I found a packet of caulis that can be started off now and are for later in the season so yes if you read the instructions and get one for planting now you are OK.

Also there is the romanesco cauliflower which is green - it's relatively new as a plant.

I will be starting some caulis soon, but they are not for this year. They are for over wintering and will take 8-9 months to produce. I get the impression you're after something a little quicker?

thanks for all your replies - looks like i will be cauli-less for a while then! especially as some of the plants i thought were caulis obviously aren't!!!!!!!!!
(I'm not as daft as i sound though - i DEFINATELY sowed cauli seeds way back in early spring- i must have mixed up the labels with the broccoli or something when i originally sowed the seed!)
what variety are you sowing now DD for harvest in 8 months?
