plant id help needed please
« on: May 27, 2015, 13:59 »
Hello could anyone help to id these plants growing in my back 'yard'? They start out a very dark burgundy red and fade to the pink you see in the picture. I am clueless. They reminded me a little of geraniums and a little of azaleas but having looked both up on Google l am none the wiser. Thank you.

Whilst Pelargoniums and Geraniums are closely related, I'm going to stick my pedantic head out and say it's a hardy Geranium (Cranesbill).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hardy geranium though not many out yet. How about a geum? I have some whose petals fade particularly if in a sunny position

Depends on the variety, spring ones definitely but not some of the summer flowering varieties

I am going to google hardy geraniums. They do not die back here. The foliage has been green all winter. (Winter was two light frosts!). I have tried to get a foliage photo on but can't make the file small enough.  :)

I think that is a Regal Pelegonium, which is a houseplant or bedding plant over here, but could well grow outside year round where you are Ann  :)
