...by some other kind people on the lottie!

Very excited about this after weeks and weeks of fruitless repeated searching on eBay, I just popped down to our allotment hut today for a bit of socialising and mentioned that I was looking out for one - and lo abd behold somebody had one to give away!!

This is gonna be my first time building a greenhouse....! I've had lots of offers of help from others on the alotment though so I can't wait!

Will probably even get a little stove and a kettle to put in there when it's done!!!!!!! (sorry about all the exclamation marks. This is a big day for me)
So everybody's entitled to opinions, I open up my mouth, and s***, I've got millions! - Lady Sovereign

I've always believed it isn't always a matter of what you know, but who you know. Good score on the greenhouse.

Me too! It must be the Good Will to all Men (and Ladies of course!). Saved about £500.

Can anybody tell me the best orientation for a greenhouse? Long axis North/South or East/West?

Thanks and Happy Christmas one and all.

Slugtrap.

I'd suggest long axis North/South so that they catch more sunshine in early morning and evening.

Ok, so now all the 'bits' for the greenhouse are on my plot I'm planning to start work on it in the New Year and I need some advice.

Its a fairly small g/h (about 6x6) and although someone has offered me bricks for the base, I was thinking it might be simpler to just put down paving slabs and to screw the frame into those - does that sound like a practical idea? It just seemed like it might be easier and quicker than building up a little brick wall. (I have somebody strong to help me so no concerns there!) The ground is fairly level so there won't be much work involved on that front. What do other people think about the paving slabs idea, is it a reasonable one?

As log as it's perfectly flat it's a fine idea. I would put a 6" layer of hardcore/rubble down first, topped off with sharp sand. This will stop any slumping, which may warp the frame and crack the glass.

If it's a smallish greenhouse, then a base made of old railway sleepers is as good as anything, gives you a bit more height too. :D

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Well, everyone except WG. Put it this way, I'll know who to blame when my tomatoes grow up all stunted and pathetic!

Work begins in January, so I'm bound to be back a few times to ask for further advice!

I'll try and post some pics when its all done  :)

My polytunnel is north-south and my greenhouses east-west, so I get the best of both worlds, but I thought east-west was supposed to be best?  Can't remember where I read that!
