Title: Should garlic be showing?
Post by: Potterer on November 15, 2019, 07:49
Hi. I’ve put garlic in 2-4 weeks ago, just below the surface. Should anything be showing by now? I may be being impatient but worried it may have rotted as it’s been so wet.

I put my stuff in two weeks back and more than fifty percent is now through and growing. The weather has been terrible for the past two weeks as well. It will be down to temperature ate the end of the day it may have been a bit warmer down here even though it has been very wet.

None of mine are showing but I've found in the past, that they're usually too busy putting down roots to bother with top growth straight away ;)

Thanks, I guess I should be patient (after all what other choice is there? I’m not going to put any more in!).

Mine went in 6/7th Oct and it is only just showing above ground.  You have to look really hard to see it breaking the soil surface.

There is nothing to do but wait.  Some cloves may have rotted but probably most are just making roots as MoS says.  I'm usually pleasantly surprised in spring to see so many have made it through, whatever the winter throws at them.

Tough old stuff garlic  :)

I just checked on my garlic which went out in October and it's all comer through I think.  But the shallots elephant garlic and onions are not yet through.  I'm not worried they always do pretty well.  In fact I planted out some more shallots and elephant garlic today.  Just because I had the bulbs and fancied a trip to the allotment.  Hey it's therapy too right.  So we'll see about those.  Looking forward to growing again next year.

Planted mine here in SW Scotland on 11th October. Clearly they've been busy putting down roots, although nothing showing up top yet, witness those pulled out and tossed around by the Continental Blackbirds that have recently arrived.

Mine went in a month ago and not showing yet, but I dug around one and it has rooted and sending a shoot upwards. Exciting times when things grow in winter conditions!
