Oregano safe in flower beds?
« on: February 18, 2010, 01:04 »
I've got a few Oregano plants I grew from seed last year, and I'm wondering whether it would be safe to put them in flower beds, as ground cover, or whether they'd just swamp everything else.  Anyone ever tried this?

I have a few spare plants of greek oregano in a flower bed and they are perfectly well behaved.  However an  ornamental alpine oregano in a gravel bed has become a bit of a menace self seeding.

Try it!

I did the same with the greek variety, small and creeping, it was fine but I wouldn't plant too many  :)

I've got it self seeded into the bed.  Like all the self seeders (love in a mist and chives grow on the same basis), if it gets out of hand it gets pulled up, but the flower stalks are great fillers in flower arrangements, so I would really miss it if it disappeared.

That is the tidiest flower bed I've ever seen :)

My beds, on the other hand, are a handful. I've got 17 separate flower beds spread over half an acre and it takes half my life, plus a pensioner's life, to even make a small dent in the weeds in the summertime. That's why I'm constantly looking for the perfect ground cover plants with no tendency for world domination.
