Why are they eating window seals?
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:15 »
For some reason they keep pecking at the
rubber seals round the patio doors and have eventually managed to get enough hold to start pulling it off in one piece so we have had to tape them back in place but don't know why they like it? Any ideas why they do this or how to deter them?  Thanks

they probably think they are worms and will keep pulling it out. Sorry but I don't think there is a way of stopping them really (they may forget about it when they find something new to try to eat  ::)).
Staffies are softer than you think.

My hens ate the putty out of my greenhouse glass. Apparently it's the linseed oil they were going for. There was no harm done, apart from the glass falling out of two of the bottom panes! If i ever need to remove puttied in windows, I'll get my girls onto it!

My destructo chooks pecked at the bottom of the kitchen door (what a racket!) and basically shredded it. I think it was usually about worms time......
I now have a double glazed door and a gate. My eggs are the most expensive in the world....!! ::) :D

One of mine managed to get a five inch piece of acrylic sealant of my windows and was chased round the garden by the other 2 girls and me trying to get it off her.  Was horrified when she managed to swollow it, but no damage done and I didnt see it come back out of the other end either.  ::)

Oh no!  One more thing I'll have to worry about when I get my hens!  Nobody tell my hubby, please.

Are hens sensitive to bitter tastes?  Many (many!) years ago when I was at school I had a friend who used to bite her fingernails.  In desperation her mother painted some stuff on them that tasted incredibly bitter.  Just for fun (being a kid) I asked for my nails to be painted too.  It was the most AWFUL taste!

So assuming chooks can taste bitterness (and are put off by it) and assuming this nail-biting stuff is still available, you could try it out.

It was specially formulated for nail-biting and was available from a chemist shop [is that what you call them over there?]  It couldn't be washed off, and had to be removed with nail polish remover.

I know the stuff you mean but think it would be quite expensive and time comsuming to paint all the window/door sealant with it and they would probably like it  :D

I think 8doubles has it sussed, definately blackmail to get more treats. Will try the anti pecking spray and see if that works. They are too busy eating snow (?) today to worry about the window seals.
