« on: May 13, 2013, 14:46 »
I have a white star chicken who started to moult last May (2012) and hasn't laid an egg since, she's in good health, has finished moulting (took months), could anyone give me any advice on how to get her to lay again

How old is your hen?  It could be that she has come to the end of her laying if she is around 3 years old.

I have an Ancona  who had a lump (previously posted about)  who stopped laying for 6 mths, moulted and then started laying again this year.  Last august I bought a Welsummer POL (so about 20/22 weeks old)  and she has never laid  although I did find a soft shelled egg in the coop last week so she may be starting...... In this cold weather some of my girls aren't laying as often.  Its all a bit weird!!!

Are you sure she was only young when you bought her or is there a chance she was older?

If you haven't already done so worm your hens with flubenvet.  Check your coop for red mite and your hens for mites and lice.  Also check for any abnormal lumps as Prod said.

If she was at point of lay in May 2 years ago, she will be nearly 2 and a half if she was 18-20 weeks when you got her.  Hybrids were only bred to lay well for 18 months, so it could very well be that she didn't have as many eggs as some of them.

OK, I know many of hem carry on laying for longer, but no one is perfect.  ;)

Hopefully she will get a new wind and start laying for another year.  I've had hybrids and pure breeds who have never laid any eggs.  :(

My Welsummer Bantams didn't start laying until they were nearly a year old.  Well worth waiting for though.   :D

I think the oldest pure breed I had was 42 weeks when she started to lay, although I did have Rosie the amberlink who didn't lay her first egg until after I gave her away at 2 and a half!   :)

thank you for all your responses, I'm beginning to think she used up all her quota of eggs in the first year and has decided to retire from egg laying knowing full well that her adopted human mother will never get rid of her!!  ::)

She may be saving a few for over the winter months when you will really appreciate them.   ;)

Can I ask what your feeding her & how much ?
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
