Hi there,

I am recently just acquired my first allotment.  I have decided to put raised beds in them.  I have read before that people: dig the area out, then put a layer of straw then put more soil.

What are the advantages of doing this or what are they other ways?

Initially I have to dig the plot over as it has grass on it.

There is no definitive method of making raised beds.  I would start by finding out what type of you soil you have and what resources ie money, timber etc and then decide.

Hi we did all our plot in raised bed it was a feild at first they ploughed and harrowed it level we put the beds in then i layed thick cardboard down then filled with top soil this was last july so we left until now , the feild was covered in docks and couch grass and i have no weeds, if your ground has no weeds just dig the turf off then double dig it back into the bottom then just build your frames around it and add muck and compost over the autum and winter to rot down and that will help improve the soil and bulk it up .
