Hollyhocks, what to do?
« on: September 16, 2015, 16:38 »
I grew some hollyhocks from seed this year. I wasn't sure where to plant them & eventually the survivors, about 10 plants were thrown into a large pot & told to fend for themselves.

They have done surprisingly well.

I know where I want to grow them next year, but what should I do with these plants. Will they "over winter" we have a very small unheated grenhouse.
Should I take them out of the pot & transplant them in next year's growing position, or just start with fresh seed next spring? I will be doing that anyway.

I would put them out into the garden. We grow hollyhocks and they overwinter here where we regularly get temperatures below -20, so much colder than you ever will. :)

Hollyhocks come back every year and have survived every winter so far on my allotment. They grow best in the garden (they need a sunny position) where their deep roots have enough space. Hollyhocks are very drought resistant, I never have to water mine.
The only thing with older hollyhocks is that their leaves often get rust, so it can be better to start with new plants after a few years.

You're welcome

One more question, do they come back from the original plant or from seed that's been self sown?

Both  :)  They are perennial plants, but will also self seed if you are lucky.  You will have more success if you collect seed and sow it yourself.  If you have several colours and collect seed to sow, you will get a some crosses in the seedlings.
