Any experience with chickens and electric fence?
« on: June 04, 2008, 13:30 »
I tried to search for any posts relating but could find nothing suitable.

After the dog has taken already one chicken and is prawling round the remaining 5 I have to find a  secure outdoor solution for them as I don't want to keep them locked in just because of the stupid Collie!!

I still have electrice sheep fence lying about (which didn't keep the sheep at bay ;) ) and was wondering if I could convert this into a moveable pen for my ladies...

So the big question is: How do hens react to an electric shock of a (cattle) fencing battery?

Thanks for any help

Bell

hi  I bought my electic fence for my ponies from someone who had bought it for her hens!  if its like mine just a two strand tape ran of a battery then its no good for hens lol.
if its proper poulrty elec fence it should  work great.
my chooks just jump over or go under the tape strands!
hop that helps

Sheep netting won't keep hens in although it will keep the dog out. You may be able to double it up to reduce the hole size.
You won't harm your birds by giving them a zap, but your dog might leave home

I keep my birds behind an electric fence and they quickly learn and the occasional jolt has never done them any harm. Best of all i used to be on a regular fox run and now they give me a miss and never come in the garden :D
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

The b..... of  a dog has got the next hen
And she had a go at her with us being in the yard   I won't be fit to let the hens out anymore at all as the dog means business. Shiny had the same injuries as Helene only that Shiny had a real shiny, beautiful coat and now she hasn't anymore  (and Helene was already very windswept looking beforehand):( I hope she survives the bites as well as Helene, who's doing brilliantly now.
I don't know, if I will even chance the fence, just in case. But the chickens won't fit through the holes unless they take the entire fence with them and hopefully electricity will prevent them from attempting it. But if the dogs get in it will be the finish of my ruffled lot... maybe I'll just put the dog against the fence and see, how sore it is on her first

Thanks for the tips anyway
