poorly hen (maybe on her way out)
« on: September 22, 2013, 13:36 »
I have a young hen, bought at auction

She has been fine for 2 weeks, but yesaterday I noticed she was just sitting/laying on the grass, she seemed as if she was trying to sleep

Anyway I picked her up and her legs look kind of strange

Anyway I seperated her from the rest (who all seem to be fine)

But she just seems to want to sleep a lot

She has food and water and has a had a little of both

I have bought her in and as you can see, she dont look too good

has anyone any ideas

It's all about the journey, not the destination

Ah, she just died, she threw a fit, kicked and that was it

But I'd like to know what she was or might have been suffering from

the only way to find out that is to have an autopsy sorry  :(

So sorry she didn't make it pepsi100.  As joyfull said the only way to find out what the cause was is an autopsy.  The feet did look a little strange so it may have been down to bad/inbreeding.   :(  I hope it was nothing contagious, did you have her quarantined from when you bought her?

Oh, yes, I always keep any birds I buy seperate from my original stock, they all seemed fine at the time

I usually keep them away from other birds for a week, but they all get the same food and water

She was wandering around quite happily, its just when she flopped down, there was nothing wrong with her before that, walking around, scrathing the grass and dirt

It does sound as if it could be down to her breeding.   :(

I keep mine in quarantine for three weeks just in case they are harbouring any nasties.  This gives me time to check them over, worm them etc. and it gives the others time to get used to the sight of the new arrivals.

There was just the usual sorting out of the pecking order for a day or so, a few feathers and that was about it

Funnily enough the biggest cockerel I have ever had isnt at the top of the pecking order (he isnt quite crowing yet though)

She was never picked on, just when she was laying down (but at times they all did that when the sun was shining)
