I want to make some cloches that look a bit like this -
http://www.allotment-garden.org/photos/1/277.jpg

It looks like some sort of piping or tubing. Anyone know what is used and best place to get it.
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.

blue water pipe seems the cheapest. Shove a stick in the end so you can plant in the earth.

I've also got my eye on a neighbours knackered gazebo, the top part still seems to be usable so was considering using that and making netting from old curtains or proper nets for a brassica cage.

I wanted to use the greenhouse frame we got from freecycle as a fruit cage, but hubby insisted on cutting the glass for it!!!  So I'm still looking for greenhouse frames or something to make a fruit cage out of.

I made a cloche out of the blue water pipe, its great because it's sturdy and large enough to grow my late spuds under fleece in.  the fleece is held on with clothes pegs but there are probably better ways of doing that

Water pipe is great - just hold the fleece down with bricks
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Milk bottles full of sand are kinder on the fleece.  :)

I've been using 4mm wires to support the netting but I reckon that the blue water pipe looks like a better option.  If anyone is looking for netting for making their own tunnels I got mine from here - scroll down a bit, its the 3m x 50m, its been brilliant

How fine is it? Will it keep small insects off?

Its not a fine as enviro netting but has kept the butterflys off my brassicas.  I also used a length for shading over my little Poly Tunnel :)

Btw I wish I had left it on a bit longer as I still had caterpillars around last week....

Anybody know where you can buy wire coathanger-grade wire on the roll? I want to make some narrower Geoff Hamilton cloches. The ones from the 99p shop are a bit flimsy (can't understand why). And I haven't got enough wire coat hangers - and it would be a pain to fiddle about bending them.

I got mine from Homebase for making pegs for my netting - thicker than coat hangers!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
