I believe it's when they reach sexual maturity and when they begin to announce their territory to any possible interlopers.

Then again some of ours have started, albeit not very well at 8 weeks old!

and I have some welsummers that looked like girls when they hatched and now look more like boys and yet they still don't crow

and I have two lavender araucanas which were hatched by a broody and one started to crow 2 weeks ago when he was 10 weeks old.  Sounds as though he is a bit rusty but definitely crowing.  So Joyful we think we have a girl and a boy which is nice, means I can hatch some more.
