sweet corns looking a bit pale and yellowish
« on: May 23, 2009, 22:33 »
Not grown sweet corn before. I planted some out over a week ago after hardening them off first for about 4 or 5 days but now it seems not as lush and green as it was. Is this normal, or are they on there way to the compost heap?
Can you hear voices?

Hi Bozwell and welcome  :D

I'll pop you over to the Grow Your Own forum.

I wouldn't give up on your sweetcorn just yet, did you harden them off for a week or two before planting them out (i.e. gradually accustom them to outdoor temps during the day and then the night)?  Have you put lots of manure down with them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks
I did harden them of for about a week.
Back in march I dug the ground over and put in lots of well rotted manure. Just before I put them out I treated the ground to some bone meal about a good hand full to each square yard. I also planted them in blocks about 18" inch each way and kept them well watered for the first couple of days till the heavens opened. Not watered today though I wanted to encourage them to go in search of there own water supply and throw some good roots down.  our ground is quite damp still under the surface still any way.
Do you reakon they might pick them selves up again?

Mine are the same if it is any consolation, if they don't buck up soon i'm giving them a pinch of blood fish and bone (for the nitrogen)...it worked on my green beans :)

You've done plenty of good things - so don't add anything more, just give 'em plenty of water; don't worry - just let them get on with it now. They will be fine.

Mine were about 6 inches high and bright green. They are now about a foot (5 days on the plot) and lighter green - a more 'norma'l colour. Good luck!

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

....  throw some good roots down
Incidentally  - corn is shallow rooted, so in a dry spell it needs water as the roots don't go down that far. Good watering and good fertilisation (nice windy conidtions as they are wind pollinated) means a good crop. Some people on this site suggest shaking the plants a bit to loosen the pollen - but make sure the wind is blowing in the right direction so you don't get pollinated!
