growing some cress
« on: April 05, 2012, 20:57 »
I have been growing some cress in my greenhouse heated, but to day we brought a pack from a supermarket, i do use the plastic container for my cress growing, so now have 3 containers.
What i can not make out is on the pack it said 80% rape seed and 20% cress seed.
What's rape seed, do i need to get some and mix with my large packet of cress seed and how come the supermarket cress looks better than mine?
Is there a nack to growing good cress?
I'm lost without my SatNav.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mustard and cress are the traditional addition to an egg sandwich.   One seed should be spread on wet kitchen paper four days before the other.  But I can never remember which seed gows on first!         Cheers,      Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Cress first, mustard later.

I'm liking this.

I always remember mustard & cress as a kid, but hardly see mustard these day's.

Didn't know the cress/rapeseed mix.

Rapeseed is a member of the brassica family, grows in fields with yellow flowers for vegetable oil production.

Also found in bird seed !

Salad rape germinates and grows much faster than true cress which is, presumably, why most of the 'cress' sold in supermarkets is actually rape. I prefer the taste of cress but if you want a quick fix sow rape seed.

I suspect one of the reasons you don't see much mustard these days is because it's a less profitable crop than some others. Hence the reason for growing our own.
