When to net my blueberries?
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:52 »
I have two blueberries growing in pots on my patio. they are south facing so they are flowering nicely.  I don't want to cover them up really as they look nice but I know I will have to.

There has been a robin in our garden for the last few days, having a really good bob around. I thought it might be because we have just put up a bird box but I am now wondering if he is after my bb's ?????

Hi,

I also have BB's in big pots. I must admit that in the three years I have had them, I have never netted them.

I've not seen any birds, big or small, picking at them and the crop is big and healthy every year so just assumed that it was OK to leave them un-netted.

Perhaps the Robin is just on a bug hunt?

I grew blueberries for over twenty years in the states and you don't need to net them until the fruit begins to ripen.  Then you MUST net if you want any fruit for yourself!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Thats funny just yesterday I saw my garden robin bobbing around where I don't usually see him right near my Blueberries.  He jumped on the pot and looked up at them but changed his mind, probably cos I told him there was peanuts and sunflower seed round the corner.LOL.

Robins usually prefer insects and worms so the blueberries should be safe from them.  Blackbirds on the other hand ...
