Hi could anyone recommend heating for polytunnel as we are in the process of buying 4 30ft x 90ft tunnels and we are stuck on how to heat them.

I rather think this is way beyond the experience of most of us amateur gardeners on this forum.
You are talking about one of these beasts taking up nearly the area of one of my entire plots. Is this really amateur gardening?

Yes and no one will be for me to grow veg in for me and the family and the other three are to grow bedding and veg in to sell and markets and at fates.

In which case I would agree with DD, that "this is way beyond the experience of most of us amateur gardeners on this forum".

To heat an area that large you would have to sell a lot of plants just to cover the heating bill. But if you want to go ahead , most nurseries use gas or oil space heaters. Expensive to buy and to run i would have thought.

Did you not look into this before starting the process of buying them?

when we ordered the tunnels we were not going to bother heating them.
we have been looking this evening to see what would be involved in having LPG heaters and tank installed.

Fatcat is right, these space heater things cost lots of money both to buy and to run, so you'd have to sell an awful lot of plants at markets and fetes to re-coup your money
Have you been in touch with Calor Gas? They are very helpful.

Wood burner might be an option heating water pipes on a system some how. But then i have as many logs as i need.

Have you used a polytunnel before?
The do actually stay quite warm except from Jan and Feb. As soon as the sun comes out even in winter the temperature shoots up.

I’ve not no I have only grown in greenhouses in the past. the tunnels are not small they are 30 x 90ft so heating may be required in them.

A a place where I worked years and years ago they had two very large poly's which were unheated.
We always used to have our brew breaks in them because even in December they were warm when the sun came out.

We have one polytunnel about half the size of one of yours. We used to grow shrubs and bedding plants in ours for sale on the markets and we never needed any heating. We did however find that we needed extra light and used some suspended fluorescent lights with special tubes
