Strawberry runners
« on: July 28, 2009, 07:53 »
Just a simple question.
My few strawberries are producing runners and I would like to grow them on, and I know that I am supposed to push the runner into soil.
But.... they are in a 3 tier planter so I can't get a pot of soil near them - top ones are 3 ft off the ground.
Can I cut the runner off and re-pot it to grow it on?
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

Hi

If you leave the runners on until they have developed a fair size plant then you might get away with planting it up then...this has worked for me a few times

you could also cut the runners off and plant into 2/3 compost and 1/3  sharp sand , leave them until they start to root then feed as with tomato feed and then leave them, replant in early spring,

Has that worked for you Peter?  I would have thought that without the parent plant giving nutrients that the resulting runner plant would be weak and poor to perform?  I'll bow to your experience if it has worked though :)

I'm no expert at it so I left mine on the plants and potted the runners in multi purp and pinned them down with wire.  they're rooting nicely and will be cut from the plant soon.

I would have thought that if you decide to do it this way, willowman, that you would need to raise the pots up to the height of the runner, for example on a shelf of some sort, until the plants can be severed.

The best way is a Snoozi says just peg them down with a bit of wire And leave mother nature to it then you leave till they are well rooted.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

if you cant pot them up still attached, wait untill they have started forming little rootlets and cut them off and pot up.
I have done this many times and it usualy works

So, there you have x amount of strawberry runners all rooted within individual pots. Now what? Leave them outside or put in greenhouse over winter? When is the best time to plant out into strawberry beds? Thanks.

I planted mine out yesterday.  I had some plants at home in pots with lots of runners (two strawberrys mind but that's another story!)  I left the runners attached and I secured them into the ground with metal hair clips (the ones you buy in the chemist for about £1 a pack) which was really easy to do.  They are still attached so advice on when to unattach would be gratefully received here!

Having the parent plant in a tall planter is going to be a problem but are any of the runners long enough to reach the floor yet?  Otherwise it will be lots of chairs or books to get the pots to the right height!

Mine were in a pot and eventually hit the ground.  I didn't bother to wire them down and they grew through the red chips path and into the ground below.  They are actually still joined because I have never bothered to separate them and I got strawberries from them this year.

Leave outside somewhere sheltered from the worst weathe rif you can , but they are hardy and need the cold spell to induce fruiting, you can always bring some into the greenhouse about mid march to give you a small early crop  :)
