Title: sweet potato
Post by: mister rotavator on February 04, 2012, 13:34
Hi all

I fancy having a go at growing sweet potatoes this year. Can anyone give me advice
       on this?

Also are sweet potatoes and yams the same veg?

No, sweet potatoes and yams are not the same veg. The true yam is the tuber of a tropical vine (Dioscorea batatas) and is not even distantly related to the sweet potato.

Sweet potatoes are less sweet, drier, and have light tan skins, depending on variety. They're commonly grown and eaten in southern North America

Yams have dark brown, bark-like skin, and flesh colours vary from cream, red and purple. Its commonly grown in South America, Africa and the Caribbean where it's far more tropical for optimal growing seasons.
