Thanksgiving - my favorite US holiday
« on: November 26, 2020, 11:17 »
Today is Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday in the United States.  It is a holiday with a simple purpose: note and be thankful for the good things in our lives. It is not a religious holiday, unless you personally want it to be. We celebrate it with family, friends, or both (this year, due to COVID-19, in small groups that are part of our 'close circle', which for us means my wife, two sons, and I, no traveling to gather with distant family).

This year, I am thankful to (and for) the many front line health workers, doing all they can to keep people alive and well, and the scientists that have worked tirelessly to develop the vaccines that will soon be available.  I count my youngest brother among these health workers; he works in a hospital, keeping ventilators and other medical equipment working.

The same brother contracted COVID-19 in the workplace. I am very thankful that his case was mild, and that he is now fully recovered. I am also thankful for other members of my family, near and far; they have remained healthy.

I am thankful too for employment that supports my family, and the food and shelter it provides. We will share what we have through local food banks.

I'm also thankful to you my gardening friends; stay well!

"Somewhere between right and wrong, there is a garden. I will meet you there."~ Rumi

Happy thanksgiving SP   :)

It is something we all should do - be thankful for what we have and the good stuff in our lives.  These are odd and difficult and trying times, but there are still things to cherish and treasure  :)

Very true!
It's so easy to focus on the things that we think are 'bad' especially right now. rather than all the  'good' things we should be grateful for.

Those are nice words and thought provoking.  We all have things to be thankful for.  I hope you all enjoy the day.  regards,  Mrs Bouquet

Happy Thanksgiving SP  :D

I've been trying to think of three things to be grateful for from the day, when I go to bed.  It's apparently one tool in the arsenal of mental better health, to express gratitude.  It need not be (and usually isn't) anything big - noticing the small things is just as important.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You know, I thought about making an apple pie to go with the pumpkin pie, but we decided one pie was plenty for the four of us. Oh well, maybe for the next holiday?

BTW, I'm the pie chef in our house. Except for using canned pumpkin, the pie was made from scratch.

When you have half an hour, SP, read one of the funniest stories ever to come out from the US, which is "A piece of pie" by Damon Runyon.

I'll post the link elsewhere, so as not to 'hog' this post!
